The Bayside Barracudas Year 9/10 Girls delivered an outstanding team performance to record a convincing 56-16 victory over Bundaberg High School in challenging conditions at the Across the Waves Sports Complex.
On a cold and windy afternoon in Bundaberg, the Barracudas showcased their skill, teamwork and resilience in a match that was far more competitive than the final scoreline suggests. While Bayside ultimately ran away with the result, Bundaberg High School continually challenged the visitors and forced them to work hard for every point.
From the outset, the Barracudas displayed excellent camaraderie and teamwork, combining effectively to create a number of impressive attacking opportunities. Their willingness to support one another in both attack and defence was evident throughout the contest, with several tries coming from well-executed team plays and strong communication across the field.
While the attack was firing, Bundaberg High ensured the contest remained fiercely competitive. The home side ran the ball strongly and capitalised on defensive lapses during the opening half, forcing the Barracudas to reassess their defensive approach.
At halftime, the focus was placed firmly on tightening up defensive structures and improving tackle completion. The response from the Barracudas was impressive. The second half saw a noticeable improvement in defensive intensity, with players using better technique, completing tackles more effectively and limiting Bundaberg’s opportunities to build momentum.
The improved defensive effort provided an ideal platform for the attack to flourish. Strong carries through the middle, clever organisation from the halves and excellent support play allowed the Barracudas to convert opportunities into points and steadily build their advantage.
Although the final result reflected a dominant attacking display, the performance was equally built on determination and defensive improvement against a spirited Bundaberg High side that never stopped competing.
Standout Performers
Tyarna Mackay-Goldsmith
The Barracudas captain led by example with an outstanding all-round performance from fullback. Tyarna directed the team around the field with confidence and positivity, constantly encouraging teammates and helping organise the defensive line. She capped off a superb display with a brilliant long-range try that showcased her speed and game awareness.
Camryn Moody
Playing at dummy half, Camryn was a constant threat around the ruck. Her sharp runs from dummy half kept Bundaberg’s defence under pressure and helped create momentum for the team throughout the game. Defensively, she was outstanding through the middle of the field and added a well-deserved try to complete an excellent performance.
Bella Lemanu
Bella was a dominant force through the middle, combining powerful running with strong defensive work. She had an unforgettable afternoon with four tries, consistently finding ways to break through the defensive line. Bella also displayed great vision and teamwork by setting up a quality try for Emileigh Vanner on the edge.
Tilly Green
Tilly delivered an exceptional game in the second-row position, carrying the ball strongly and challenging defenders with every touch. Her powerful running made her difficult to contain, while her defensive efforts included several impressive one-on-one tackles that helped halt Bundaberg’s attacking progress.
Coach’s Comments
Coach Brett Carter was pleased with the team’s efforts, particularly the way they responded defensively in the second half.
“I was happy with the effort from the team. In the first half we fell off a lot of tackles, which allowed Bundy High to make some great runs. At halftime we spoke about correcting our defence, tightening things up and using our shoulders more effectively in tackles.
Our attack was good and we set up some excellent tries as a team. The halves worked well together and were very organised throughout the game.”
The match highlighted the growing confidence and cohesion within the squad, with strong performances right across the field contributing to a well-earned victory.

The Barracudas will look to continue their strong form when they meet Bundaberg High School once again on 31 August 2026 at the ATW Sports Complex, Bundaberg.
With lessons learned and confidence gained from this performance, the Year 9/10 Girls will be eager to build on their momentum and produce another strong team display in the return fixture.
