The Bayside Barracudas Rugby League Development Program recently welcomed Jess and Sam from program sponsor, Active Body/VF Supplements for an engaging and eye-opening session focused on one of the most misunderstood topics in youth sport: supplements.
With the rise of social media influencers, flashy marketing, and an overwhelming number of products on the shelves, it’s never been more important for young athletes to cut through the noise and understand what actually supports their performance and wellbeing. This presentation did exactly that by empowering participants with practical knowledge, critical thinking skills, and a strong foundation for making informed decisions.
Debunking Supplement Myths
A key focus of the session was dispelling common myths around supplements. Many young athletes assume that the more products they take, the better their performance will be. However, Jess and Sam were clear: not all supplements are necessary and some are only appropriate for certain ages or stages of development.
The athletes learned that taking supplements without understanding their purpose can be ineffective at best and harmful at worst. Growth, recovery, and performance are complex processes influenced by many factors. They’re not something that can be “fixed” by a quick scoop or tablet. This message reinforced the importance of education over assumption.
Supplements Are Not a Shortcut
One of the most important takeaways from the session was that supplements are exactly what their name suggests. They are a supplement to an already strong foundation.
The presenters emphasised that no supplement can replace:
- A balanced, nutrient-rich diet
- Proper hydration
- Consistent training and effort
- Adequate rest and recovery
While certain products can provide an extra boost in very specific situations, they are not a substitute for the basics. For young athletes especially, focusing on whole foods, structured training, and healthy habits is far more impactful than relying on powders or pills.
Navigating the Social Media Minefield
In today’s digital world, young athletes are constantly exposed to sponsored posts, influencer endorsements, and “before-and-after” transformations that promote supplement use. The session tackled this head-on, encouraging players to approach what they see online with a critical eye.
The message was clear: not everything you see online is trustworthy.
Paid partnerships, edited images, and selective testimonials can create a distorted picture of reality. The athletes were encouraged to ask questions like:
- Who is promoting this product and why?
- Is there evidence behind the claims?
- Is this suitable for my age and training level?
By developing this mindset, the Barracudas are better equipped to make decisions based on facts, not hype.
Learning to Read the Fine Print
One of the most practical components of the presentation was teaching athletes how to read supplement labels. This skill is often overlooked, yet it’s one of the most important tools for consumer awareness.
The group learned:
- How to identify key ingredients
- What to look for in terms of dosage
- Which additives and compounds may be unnecessary or even harmful
- Why “proprietary blends” can be misleading
Understanding labels helps athletes take control of what they are putting into their bodies. This is an essential step toward both safety and performance.
