A new chapter has begun for the mighty Barracudas, as we welcome Coach Michael Bennett into the role of Director of Rugby League.
Following years of dedication as a Bayside Christian College staff member, and most recently as the Barracudas Assistant Coach, Mr Bennett is primed to put his unique set of skills and experience into action.
Bayside Principal/CEO, Brian Grimes, said this was an important step forward for the Barracudas.
“I believe this restructure represents a significant opportunity for our program to make even greater advances for our players, both on and off the field, and for the future stars who are yet to lace up their boots,” Mr Grimes said.
Many of you will already know Mr Bennett, but here is a chance to get to know him better, and to understand his heart and passion for football and the Barracudas.
What is your professional background like?
I have an extensive background in business leadership, sales, and operations management, having worked as a Partner, General Manager, and Operations Manager across several logistics companies.
My roles focused on developing and implementing company policies, including OH&S procedures, while leading sales and marketing strategies.
I managed fleet operations, coordinated subcontract drivers, oversaw freight logistics, and built and maintained strong client relationships.
A key strength of mine has been building efficient systems and processes, including implementing IT and communication solutions that improved workflow, accountability, and overall service delivery.
What’s your involvement in football been like over the years?
My involvement in football has been long-standing and community-focused, particularly through school and junior development pathways.
I’ve been involved as a player, coach, mentor, and supporter, working closely with players, parents, and staff to create a positive sporting environment. My focus has always been on player development, well-being, whilst creating opportunities and systems for students to grow both on and off the field.
Coach Bennett is a man of many talents, with an extensive background in business and sport.
How did you get involved with the Barracudas?
My involvement with the Barracudas developed naturally through my prior connection with the Hervey Bay Seagulls, school sport, and a passion for supporting young athletes.
Starting as a parent and supporter, I became more actively involved through first aid, coaching, and assisting with team operations. Over time, this grew into a deeper commitment to the program, working alongside our coach, staff, and players to help build a strong, Christian values-driven rugby league culture.
What kind of impact do you think the Barracudas have on students?
The Barracudas program has a significant positive impact on students. It provides them with a sense of belonging, structure, and purpose, while also promoting discipline, teamwork, and resilience.
Importantly, it creates opportunities for students who may not always have thrived in the classroom to succeed in another environment, helping build confidence and self-worth. It also strengthens our Christian school values, connections, and encourages positive behaviours both on and off the field.
What kind of impact would you like to have through your role as Director?
As Director, I want to continue building a program that is inclusive, supportive, and development focused. My goal is to create opportunities for all students to participate and succeed, regardless of their ability level, while maintaining high standards and clear pathways for progression.
I’m passionate about ensuring the program not only develops better players but also better people, students who demonstrate respect, accountability, and resilience. I also want to strengthen systems and structures within the program to ensure its long-term sustainability and continued growth.
Mr Grimes acknowledged and thanked Barracudas coach, Brett Carter, who will move from his role as Head Coach into a role that allows him to focus more energy on coaching the Barracudas teams.
“Brett is an outstanding coach and having him dedicate more time to the players will be a pleasing outcome for all,” Mr Grimes said.
“The College will be seeking additional coaches to join the program in the next few years, due to the increasing number of students and teams that we will have.”
