The Bayside Barracudas Open Girls showed resilience and determination across a challenging day at the Karyn Murphy Cup, competing strongly in four hard-fought matches against quality opposition.

Match Summary

The Barracudas opened their campaign with a strong and spirited 8–4 win over Shalom College, setting the tone early with disciplined defence and effective attacking execution. The team showed good structure and composure to hold off their opponents in a tight contest.

In the second match, the Barracudas came up against a powerful Bundaberg High side, who struck early and applied sustained pressure. Despite the girls’ efforts to respond, Bundaberg High’s fast start proved difficult to overcome.

As the day progressed, injuries began to take their toll on the squad. Even so, the Barracudas continued to show grit and unity, sticking together through the final two matches. While results didn’t go their way, the team’s effort, commitment, and willingness to compete in every contest never dropped.

There were plenty of positives to take from the day, particularly in the team’s structure and ability to stay competitive despite setbacks.

Ruby Castle

Playing out of position in the centres, Ruby delivered a strong performance, combining solid defence with powerful running that helped gain valuable metres for the team.

Haylie Adams

In her return from a lengthy injury layoff, Haylie showed great determination and courage. Her running game was strong, and her one-on-one low tackles were a highlight throughout the day.

Lilly Sloan

Produced another impressive all-round performance, with some big defensive hits and a powerful running game that made her difficult for opponents to contain.

“This group of girls is coming together well, especially as they haven’t had many games so far this year. Their effort and willingness to play for each other was great to see. With more games coming up, they’ll only continue to improve as a team. Their structure today was outstanding.”
