The Bayside Barracudas Opens Boys faced a tough challenge in Round 2 of the Dolphins Shield, going down 56–0 to a strong and well-drilled Xavier College side at Hervey Bay Seagulls.
Already short on numbers heading into the match, the Barracudas were further tested against a highly skilled Xavier outfit. Playing into a strong wind in the first half, the Barracudas found it difficult to gain field position, while Xavier took full advantage of both the conditions and their attacking opportunities to build early momentum and pile on points.
Despite the scoreboard pressure, the Barracudas continued to compete, showing resilience and determination throughout the contest. The second half saw a spirited response from the team, who refused to back down. With improved confidence, they began to move the ball more freely, demonstrating their willingness to attack and support one another. The team’s effort and mateship were evident, as they worked hard for each other and made valuable metres with ball in hand.
While the result didn’t go their way, the Barracudas displayed plenty of character, particularly given the challenging circumstances.
Standout Performers
Tyson Evans – Led strongly in defence from the centres, delivering several big hits and showing composure under pressure.
Tyson Saunders – Produced a powerful all-round performance, combining strong attacking carries with committed defence.
Hugo Lucas – Worked tirelessly across the field, with excellent support play leading to strong metres gained. Also impressed defensively in the 5/8 role.
Special Mention:
Athan Bekos, Ryan Etherington, Hunter Hartwig, Damien Windle – A big thank you to these players for stepping in and representing the Barracudas.
Their effort, especially after only two morning training sessions with the squad, was outstanding and greatly appreciated by the team.

Coach Brett Carter praised the team’s determination and resilience in difficult conditions:
“I’m extremely happy with the boys’ effort today. They never gave up and played right through to the final whistle. Xavier College is a very strong and experienced side, and they put us under pressure from the outset.
With players unavailable and four boys stepping in to help field a team, there’s a lot to be proud of. The effort and attitude shown give us plenty to look forward to in the future of Opens rugby league.”
