The Bayside Barracudas U15/16 Boys secured a strong 28–10 victory over Xavier College in Round 2 of the Dolphins Plate at Hervey Bay Seagulls, overcoming a challenging first half to dominate after the break.
The Barracudas got off to an ideal start, crossing early to establish momentum. However, errors began to creep into their game, putting them under sustained pressure defensively as Xavier College capitalised on field position. With a strong breeze at their backs, Xavier mounted a comeback, scoring two tries to take the lead as the half progressed.
Despite the shift in momentum, the Barracudas showed resilience, tightening up their play late in the half and scoring a crucial try just before the break. This effort saw them head into halftime with a narrow 12–10 advantage.
The second half told a different story. With the wind now in their favour, the Barracudas executed their game plan effectively. Improved discipline, smart kicking, and strong chase efforts allowed them to control field position. Simplifying their attack and returning to basics proved key, as they built pressure and capitalised on opportunities to extend their lead.
Strong defence remained a cornerstone of their performance, with solid contact in the middle and impressive line speed in the outside backs restricting Xavier’s attacking options. The Barracudas’ persistence paid off, as they ran in further points to secure a convincing 28–10 win.
Standout Performers
Utah Blaikie – Delivered an outstanding all-round performance, making powerful carries that consistently broke the defensive line while also contributing strongly on the defensive end.
Tristan Franklin – Made a successful return from injury, leading from the front with hardworking runs through the middle and reliable defence to set the platform for the team.
Leon Ford – Impressive playing out of position, showing pace and agility out wide. His kick returns were particularly effective, turning defence into attack with valuable metres gained.
Coach’s Comments
Coach Brett Carter praised the team’s overall effort, particularly in the second half:
“I was really happy with our efforts today, especially after halftime. In the first half, we pushed too many passes and made things harder for ourselves. With the strong wind, we needed to play a tighter, more controlled game.
“Our defence really won us the match – big hits through the middle and great line speed out wide put pressure on Xavier’s attack. The boys adapted well and capitalised on their opportunities in the second half.”
