Match Summary

The Bayside Barracudas Year 9/10 Boys showed tremendous courage and resilience in a hard-fought Broncos Challenge contest against Gympie High School, eventually going down 20-12 in the final game of the day at Jack Stokes Oval.

After supporting the three Barracudas teams that had played earlier, the boys were eager to finish the day strongly. However, Gympie came out firing and crossed for an early try, putting the home side on the front foot. The Barracudas regrouped well and applied pressure of their own, but Gympie’s powerful forward pack and dangerous edge attack proved difficult to contain, with the hosts adding two more tries before halftime.

With the Barracudas seeing limited possession during the opening half and already missing four players through injury, the team faced a significant challenge heading into the break trailing 14-6. Despite the adversity, the boys remained determined and dug deep for one another.

The second half was a different story, with the Barracudas lifting their intensity and applying sustained pressure. Their strong defence forced errors from Gympie, creating opportunities to work their way back into the contest. The turning point came when Jahleal Barney capitalised on a Gympie mistake, racing 80 metres to score a brilliant try and reduce the deficit to just two points at 14-12.

With momentum swinging towards the Barracudas and the game hanging in the balance, the boys continued to push for a winning score. Unfortunately, with only three minutes remaining, Gympie crossed near the posts to seal the match. While the result did not fall their way, the Barracudas can take great pride in a determined performance against a strong opposition side.

Standout Performers

Utah Blaikie led from the front at lock, producing a powerful display through the middle of the field. His strong carries consistently bent the defensive line, while his physical defensive efforts helped set the standard for the team.

Jezra Tobane was outstanding at fullback, safely handling several towering kicks from the Gympie playmakers under intense pressure. His composure, positioning and crucial cover tackles provided an important last line of defence throughout the match.

Leon Ford worked tirelessly at hooker, delivering excellent service to his halves and creating momentum with his sharp runs from dummy-half. He also impressed defensively with strong low tackles and effective combination work with his teammates.

Coach’s Comments

“I was really proud of the boys’ effort both on and off the field today. They supported the three Barracudas teams that played before them and then had to take on a very strong Gympie side in warm conditions during the middle of the day.”

“The attitude of this group was exceptional. They never gave up, even when things weren’t going their way. We made some errors, but the boys kept regrouping, stayed focused and continued to fight for each other. It was an unlucky result, but the team should be very proud of its performance and commitment.”

Looking Ahead

The Barracudas will now await confirmation of their next Broncos Challenge fixture, with details for their October 2026 match yet to be announced.

While the result didn’t go their way, the Year 9/10 Boys displayed outstanding determination, character and team spirit. Those qualities will hold them in good stead as they prepare for their next opportunity and continue to build throughout the season.
