Bayside Barracudas Open Girls vs Combined Bundaberg High Schools

The Bayside Barracudas Open Girls made a successful return to the football field with a well-earned 28-16 victory over Combined Bundaberg High Schools at the ATW Sports Complex.
In what was the team’s first match together in approximately four months, the girls were faced with an unusual challenge before kick-off. Due to injuries and player shortages within the Combined Bundaberg High Schools squad, the game was played as a nine-a-side contest, with Bayside demonstrating outstanding sportsmanship by providing three players to assist their opponents and ensure the match could proceed.
The altered format required a significant adjustment to the team’s usual structures and playing patterns. With more space across the field and fewer players involved, the Barracudas were forced to adapt quickly and think differently in both attack and defence. To their credit, the girls embraced the challenge, showing composure, flexibility and a willingness to work through the changes as the match unfolded.
Despite the disrupted preparation and unfamiliar playing conditions, Bayside maintained their focus and gradually gained control of the contest. The team produced some strong passages of football, using their speed and skill to create scoring opportunities while remaining committed defensively.
Coach and players alike recognised there were opportunities left on the field, particularly in attacking situations where execution could have been sharper. However, considering the lengthy break from competitive football and the unusual circumstances surrounding the match, the performance provided plenty of encouraging signs for the remainder of the season.
Most importantly, the game offered valuable match fitness and the opportunity to rebuild combinations as the squad continues to develop. The victory was a rewarding result and an important step forward as the Open Girls begin building momentum once again.
Standout Performers
Amelie Staib
Amelie produced an outstanding all-round performance and was a constant threat whenever she touched the ball. Her ability to keep defenders guessing between running and passing created numerous opportunities for her team, while her defensive work was equally impressive throughout the match.
Lilly Sloan
Lilly delivered another selfless performance in the lock position, leading through effort and determination. Her strong carries consistently helped Bayside gain momentum, while her tough defensive work and physicality around the ruck set the tone for the team.
Tahnee Baldwin
Tahnee was powerful through the middle of the field, regularly getting the team on the front foot with strong, direct running. In a remarkable display of teamwork and sportsmanship, she also spent time playing for both teams, helping ensure the match remained competitive and enjoyable for all involved.
Ruby Castle
Ruby ran the football with purpose and continually challenged the defensive line with her direct approach. Her commitment to fair play was equally impressive, volunteering to swap teams when assistance was needed. Her actions reflected the values of respect, teamwork and sportsmanship that the Barracudas program proudly promotes.
Coach’s Comments
The coaching staff were pleased with the team’s effort and adaptability after such an extended period away from competition.
“The Open Girls returned to the field with a hard-fought win against Combined Bundaberg High Schools in what was their first game together in approximately four months.
There were certainly opportunities left on the field, with several attacking opportunities not converted and some areas of our execution needing improvement. However, given the extended break from competitive football, there were plenty of positives to take from the performance.
The game provided valuable match fitness and an opportunity to identify areas that require further work. There is plenty more to build on, particularly around our attacking execution, communication, decision-making and maintaining our structure for longer periods.”
The match highlighted not only the team’s football ability but also their character. By helping their opposition field a complete side and adapting to unexpected circumstances, the Open Girls demonstrated the spirit of the game while still producing a strong winning performance.
