Ruby Lennon took some time to reflect on the experience of playing for Wide Bay in the Schoolgirls Representative competition.
What was the most valuable experience you gained from representing the Wide Bay region (on and off the field)?
The most valuable thing I learnt on the field was how important it is to control the tackle and ball, to move up off the line, to chase the ball when kicking or when receiving, and just having good sportsmanship on and off the field.
How did the standard of competition compare to what you’re used to? What did you learn about your game?
The standard of competition compared to what I’m used to was very different as the girls I played were higher up in fitness, tackling techniques, and ball movement. Although the girls I usually play are still good at what they do, these girls were more experienced with these things.
What challenges did you face during the carnival (physical, mental, or emotional)? How did you handle them?
A challenge I faced while at Wide Bay was accepting how differently I played due to the girls’ size difference and not being able to play to the best of my ability.
How has this experience influenced your goals or motivation for rugby league moving forward?
This experience has influenced my motivation for rugby league by giving me an idea on what I have to work up to as a team mate and player.
What advice would you give to other girls in our program who aspire to represent at a regional level?
I would advise them to give it their all and make sure they enjoy the experience because working your way up in footy is the best feeling to experience. Even if your team is on the bottom of the ladder it is an experience to see different teams playing in different ways and you can also pick up a thing or two while being there.
